Jewelry Care

Effective Date: September 29, 2026

At RAWCLIFFE MODE LTD, we want your jewelry to remain beautiful and enjoyable for as long as possible.

Proper care can help reduce scratches, discoloration, surface buildup, and unnecessary wear. The following recommendations are intended to help you look after your jewelry as part of your everyday routine.

1. Handle Jewelry With Care

Jewelry can be affected by impact, friction, moisture, chemicals, and everyday wear.

Handle your pieces carefully when putting them on, removing them, cleaning them, or storing them.

Avoid pulling chains, bending delicate components, or applying unnecessary pressure to clasps, settings, posts, or other small parts.

2. Keep Jewelry Away From Chemicals

We recommend removing jewelry before applying:

  • Perfume

  • Body sprays

  • Lotions

  • Cosmetics

  • Hair products

  • Household cleaning products

  • Bleach or chlorine-based products

Chemicals found in cosmetics, cleaning products, chlorine, and other everyday substances can affect certain metals, finishes, and gemstones.

As a general rule, apply personal-care products first and allow them to dry before putting on your jewelry.

3. Remove Jewelry Before Swimming

We recommend removing jewelry before swimming in pools, using hot tubs, or participating in activities where the jewelry may be exposed to chlorine or other chemicals.

Chlorine and other chemicals may damage or discolor certain metals and can affect some gemstones.

For the same reason, jewelry should generally be removed before using household cleaning products.

4. Avoid Excessive Water and Moisture

Although occasional exposure to water may not affect every type of jewelry, prolonged exposure to moisture can contribute to tarnishing, discoloration, or deterioration of certain finishes and materials.

For this reason, we recommend removing jewelry before:

  • Showering

  • Bathing

  • Swimming

  • Exercising

  • Washing dishes

  • Cleaning

  • Sleeping

Allow jewelry to dry completely if it becomes wet.

5. Cleaning Your Jewelry

For many jewelry pieces, gentle cleaning is preferable to harsh cleaning products.

A simple cleaning method may include:

  1. Use lukewarm water.

  2. Add a small amount of mild soap where appropriate.

  3. Gently clean the surface with a soft cloth or very soft brush.

  4. Rinse carefully.

  5. Dry thoroughly with a clean, soft, lint-free cloth.

GIA notes that warm water, mild soap, and gentle handling are suitable cleaning approaches for many types of jewelry, while different gemstones and treatments may require special care.

Always consider the specific material and gemstone before applying any cleaning method.

6. Avoid Abrasive Cleaners

Do not use abrasive materials, toothpaste, harsh household cleaners, bleach, or other aggressive cleaning products unless the specific jewelry material has been confirmed as suitable for them.

Abrasive products can scratch certain metals and surfaces, while chlorine-based chemicals may damage some jewelry alloys and gemstones.

When in doubt, use a soft cloth and seek professional advice.

7. Be Careful With Ultrasonic Cleaners

We do not recommend using an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner unless you know that the particular piece and its gemstones are suitable for ultrasonic cleaning.

Some gemstones, treated stones, organic materials, and delicate settings can be damaged by ultrasonic cleaning or vibration.

If you are unsure about a particular piece, professional cleaning by a qualified jeweler is the safer option.

8. Jewelry With Gemstones

Different gemstones can have different levels of durability and sensitivity.

Some gemstones may be affected by:

  • Heat

  • Sudden temperature changes

  • Chemicals

  • Solvents

  • Excessive moisture

  • Ultrasonic cleaning

  • Strong impact

Treated or porous gemstones may require additional care.

If your jewelry contains a gemstone with specific care instructions, follow those instructions rather than applying a general cleaning method.

9. Pearls and Other Delicate Materials

Pearls and other delicate or porous materials require additional care.

Avoid exposing pearls to perfume, hairspray, cosmetics, cleaning products, and other harsh chemicals. GIA recommends wiping pearls after wear and storing them separately in a soft pouch or case to reduce scratching.

Do not use abrasive cleaners or aggressive polishing methods on delicate materials.

10. Prevent Scratches

Store jewelry pieces separately whenever possible.

Different pieces can scratch one another when stored together, particularly when harder materials come into contact with softer surfaces.

We recommend:

  • Using a jewelry box with separate compartments.

  • Keeping delicate pieces in individual soft pouches.

  • Separating necklaces and chains to reduce tangling.

  • Keeping pieces away from sharp or rough objects.

Proper storage can help reduce scratches and accidental damage.

11. Store Jewelry Properly

When jewelry is not being worn, keep it in a clean, dry, and protected location.

A jewelry box, individual pouch, or suitable storage case can help protect pieces from dust, friction, moisture, and accidental impact.

Avoid leaving jewelry loose on bathroom counters, sinks, or other areas where it may be exposed to excessive moisture.

12. Tarnishing and Discoloration

Some jewelry materials may naturally change appearance over time.

Exposure to air, moisture, perspiration, cosmetics, chemicals, and other environmental conditions can contribute to tarnishing or discoloration.

This does not necessarily indicate a manufacturing defect.

Regular gentle cleaning and appropriate storage can help reduce these effects.

13. Exercise and Physical Activities

We recommend removing jewelry before exercising or participating in physical activities.

Perspiration, friction, impact, and contact with equipment may affect jewelry and increase the risk of scratching, bending, loosening, or other damage.

Removing jewelry before physical activity can help extend its appearance and condition.

14. Sleeping With Jewelry

We recommend removing jewelry before going to sleep.

Overnight movement may place unnecessary pressure on chains, clasps, settings, earrings, and other delicate components.

Removing jewelry before sleeping also reduces friction and accidental pulling.

15. Travel and Storage

When travelling, keep jewelry in a dedicated case or pouch rather than placing pieces loosely inside luggage.

Where possible:

  • Store each piece separately.

  • Protect delicate surfaces from impact.

  • Keep chains separated to reduce tangling.

  • Avoid placing heavy objects on top of jewelry.

  • Keep jewelry away from liquids and cosmetics.

Individual storage can help reduce scratches and other travel-related damage.

16. Regular Inspection

We recommend periodically checking your jewelry for signs of wear.

Pay particular attention to:

  • Loose stones

  • Damaged clasps

  • Bent components

  • Worn chains

  • Loose settings

  • Broken posts

  • Significant scratches or surface damage

If a piece appears damaged or a gemstone appears loose, stop wearing it until it has been inspected or repaired where appropriate.

17. Professional Cleaning

For valuable, delicate, heavily worn, antique, or gemstone-set jewelry, professional cleaning and inspection may be appropriate.

Professional jewelers can determine which cleaning method is suitable for the specific material and construction.

GIA recommends professional attention for jewelry where the appropriate cleaning method is uncertain, particularly when delicate gemstones or settings are involved.

18. Jewelry Care and Normal Wear

Jewelry is designed to be worn, and minor changes may naturally occur over time.

Normal signs of wear may include:

  • Minor surface scratches

  • Gradual changes in finish

  • Tarnishing

  • Small changes caused by regular use

The rate at which these changes occur depends on the material, frequency of wear, storage conditions, and exposure to environmental factors.

19. Product-Specific Care

If a particular jewelry item includes additional care instructions, those instructions should take priority over general recommendations in this guide.

If you are unsure how to clean or maintain a specific item purchased from us, please contact our customer support team before using strong cleaning products or specialized equipment.
